Essener SG II and SC Werden-Heidhausen II match abandoned due to broom problem
A bizarre incident led to the cancellation of the football match between Essener SG II and SC Werden-Heidhausen II in District League B last weekend.
The match, set to be an ordinary encounter in the Essen District League B, took an unexpected turn.
The second team of Essener SG was ready to host SC Werden-Heidhausen II, one of the promotion contenders who currently sit fourth in the league, while Essener SG struggles in the lower midfield.
However, upon arrival, the SCWH players were forced to turn back as the referee refused to start the match due to safety concerns.
One of the penalty areas at Dinnendahlstraße was covered in a thick layer of leaves, posing a slipping and injury hazard—a common sight in autumn.
Unfortunately, there were no brooms available to clear the leaves, preventing the players from resolving the issue themselves. Moving to an alternative pitch on the site was also not possible, as it was closed by the city of Essen due to a hole in the artificial turf.
With no other options, both teams had to leave the venue.
The match is now rescheduled for Thursday evening, October 24, at 7 PM, provided that leaves don’t interfere once again.
