James Maddison England call up?
James Maddison once again found himself watching from home as England continued their UEFA Nations League campaign.
After his impressive performances for Leicester City and now Tottenham Hotspur, the 27-year-old was overlooked by both Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024 and Lee Carsley for September’s fixtures. Unfortunately, he was also left out of this month’s squad for games against Greece and Finland.
Despite consistently showcasing his talent at club level, Maddison’s international career has struggled to gain momentum, with only seven England caps to his name—six of those earned in the last 18 months.
Competing for a spot in England’s squad is challenging, given the wealth of talent in his position. Maddison faces stiff competition from the likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, and Morgan Gibbs-White, all of whom are vying for similar roles.
For now, Maddison’s focus will be on maintaining his strong performances for Tottenham in hopes that his international prospects improve.
A significant boost for him could be the recent appointment of Thomas Tuchel as England’s new head coach.
The former Chelsea manager, who has signed an 18-month contract, is expected to bring his winning mentality and tactical acumen to the national team, with the goal of achieving success at the 2026 World Cup.
Following his appointment, Tuchel expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.
To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
With a new manager in charge, Maddison will be hoping for fresh opportunities to prove himself on the international stage and secure a spot in England’s squad moving forward.
