Jonas Eidevall departs as Arsenal WSL manager
Jonas Eidevall has officially stepped down as head coach of Arsenal Women, a surprising move considering the mounting pressure he faced following a poor start to the season.
The announcement, made on Tuesday morning, marks a significant shift for the London club.
Under Eidevall’s leadership, the team struggled to gain momentum, securing just one win in their first four Women’s Super League matches.
Adding to their difficulties, their Champions League campaign was hampered by a disappointing 5-2 loss to Bayern Munich.
Former Arsenal player Ellen White expressed her surprise at the news during her appearance on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Women’s Football Weekly Podcast. “I was really shocked, especially by his decision to resign,” she said. “There was a lot of pressure on him and the club as a whole.” Though she anticipated a possible change, she was taken aback by how quickly it unfolded.
Reflecting on the team’s recent struggles, including a 2-1 loss to Chelsea, White commented, “I couldn’t see what the players’ tactics or philosophy were. It seemed disjointed and somewhat individualistic.”
Jen Beattie, a former Arsenal defender, shared her perspective, drawing from her experience working under Eidevall.
She noted that while the resignation wasn’t entirely unexpected given the team’s difficulties, it was still disappointing. “You could feel the criticism weighing on him,” she said on the podcast.
“His post-match interviews showed a lot—there was a noticeable lack of confidence. Given the poor start, I can’t say I was completely surprised.”
Beattie emphasized the high standards at Arsenal, stating,
“At a club like Arsenal, you can’t start the season this way.” She acknowledged that the club was well aware of these expectations.
