Klopp facing fans backlash at Mainz
Jürgen Klopp, the esteemed former manager of Liverpool, is facing significant backlash from fans following his recent appointment as the head of global football at Red Bull.
This controversial move has sparked discontent in Germany, particularly among supporters of his former club, Mainz, who have expressed their disapproval publicly.
The 57-year-old German coach is set to begin his new role on January 1, just six months after departing Liverpool for what many assumed would be a long sabbatical.
In this new position, Klopp will move away from the daily responsibilities of team management to focus on overseeing Red Bull’s multi-club network, which includes RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and the New York Red Bulls.
Leipzig’s presence, in particular, has been a contentious issue within German football culture.
Klopp’s association with Red Bull, viewed by some as contrary to traditional football values in Germany, has sparked outrage among the passionate fans of his previous clubs, Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.
During Mainz’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig on Saturday, frustrated fans displayed banners criticizing their once-revered coach. One banner read, “Have you forgotten everything we gave you?” while another provocatively asked, “Are you crazy?”
The most striking banner referenced one of Klopp’s own past quotes: “I like people until they disappoint me.”
Klopp, who spent eleven years as a player at Mainz before becoming their manager, is celebrated for leading the club from the second division to the Bundesliga during his seven-year tenure.
His success continued at Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles, solidifying his legendary status at both clubs.
His decision to align with Red Bull has now cast a shadow over his legacy in the eyes of some of his most loyal supporters.
