Nathan Ake and Kyle Walker injury update
International breaks have become a major issue for Manchester City.
This season alone has seen both Nathan Ake and Kyle Walker sustain injuries while playing for their national teams.
Last season was no different, with John Stones missing matches after picking up an injury during an otherwise unimportant friendly.
The burden of these international fixtures falls heavily on clubs, especially a team like Manchester City, which has become all too familiar with this situation.
According to Jack Gaughan in the Daily Mail, Kyle Walker suffered a knee injury during England’s 3-1 Nations League win over Finland.
Consequently, City’s captain missed their recent 2-1 victory over Wolves and will also be sidelined for tonight’s Champions League match against Sparta Prague. Walker’s injury follows Nathan Ake’s hamstring problem, sustained while representing the Netherlands in September.
Both injuries occurred during UEFA Nations League games—essentially competitive friendlies—which adds to the frustration.
In his pre-match press conference before the Sparta Prague fixture, Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration over the lack of communication between clubs and national teams.
He remarked, “When I was a player, the national team manager would reach out to the clubs, but now there’s no dialogue.
Maybe the physios communicate, but the managers rarely do. In Gareth’s early seasons, it was different, but that’s no longer the case.”
