Reasons Manchester Utd parted ways with Alex Ferguson
The new co-owner of Manchester United, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, personally met with Sir Alex Ferguson to inform him of the decision to end his financial ties with the club. Although not a dismissal in the traditional sense, it marks the end of Ferguson’s official involvement with United, notwithstanding his deep connection to its success.
After decades of service as manager and later as a global ambassador, Ferguson has seen the termination of his financial relationship with the club.
This decision is part of a broader cost-cutting strategy led by Ratcliffe and his company, INEOS.
The office at Old Trafford that Ferguson once used as the club’s global ambassador now stands empty, as the annual salary of nearly £3 million ($3.9 million) he received to maintain his presence will no longer be provided.
The move, while practical, has left a bitter note, as it symbolizes the fading remnants of a golden era for the club.
Ratcliffe, who has acquired 27.7% of Manchester United shares, had previously expressed admiration for Ferguson, calling him an “essential part of Manchester United’s history.” However, during their face-to-face meeting, he made it clear that the club could no longer justify their financial arrangement.
Local reports suggest the conversation was cordial, but the decision was definitive.
During his time as manager, Ferguson transformed Manchester United into a football dynasty. His 26 seasons at the helm delivered 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, and numerous other accolades, solidifying the club’s status as a global powerhouse.
After his retirement in 2013, Ferguson remained a significant presence, continuing as a club ambassador and staying close to the fans.
The cost-cutting measures at Old Trafford extend beyond Ferguson’s departure. Ratcliffe and INEOS’s radical approach includes the cancellation of the traditional Christmas party for employees, the dismissal of 250 staff members, and the removal of perks like free trips to the FA Cup final for employees.
Even executive privileges such as private chauffeurs and corporate credit cards are being reviewed, signaling a broader transformation in the club’s financial operations.
